9 May. Coimbra

At 8 o'clock, after the usual buffet, we met in reception to walk through the town and up the hill to the university, which was our guided tour this morning. It's pretty old and they're very proud of it, the library in particular, and the buildings that used to be a palace.

The early start meant that by midmorning we were released on our own recognisance. Lynn and I started by going to the museum cafe for a coffee.

Then we wound our way back down the hill, stopping to look in the various cathedrals and shops we'd passed on the way up and eventually to have some lunch.

By two we were back at the hotel. We had a break and then went out to the Centro de Fado for a fado performance. This is a specifically Portugese form of guitar music, sort of folk ballads, played with a 12 string Portugese guitar plus a classical guitar and some guy singing, all of them dressed in black with capes. It was pretty entertaining while still being as pretentious as it sounds.

To round out the day we all went to a rooftop bar that looked back at the hillside, and then to a local grill restaurant that particularly did big skewers of meat.
